and three main types; the Red Kangaroo, the Western Grey, and the Eastern Grey.
All inhabit Australian continent.
Kangaroos have strong & long legs, large feet adapted for
leaping, clawed fourth toes and a small head. They move by hopping and use
their large tails for steering. The tail is also used as a third leg if a
kangaroo is standing and for balanceing. Kangaroo Incapable of walking, the
kangaroo has adapted two muscular hind legs, which allow for hopping. The
tallest kangaroo is 6 feet and weighs 150 to 200 pounds. The most common
colours for kangaroos are: grey, red, black, yellow or brown. Their average
life expectancy in the wild is 10 - 20 years or more.
Kangaroos will eat shoots and leaves from shrubs and grass trees.
They usually spend their days laying around in the shade, coming out at night
to graze on food. A female kangaroo gives birth to one joey at a time inside
her pouch for six months and then it ventures out. Males engage in a form of "boxing"
when females go into heat. Biting and clawing can also occur to fend off
opponents.
